Affiliate Programs
Whether it's as potentially profitable as they imply, has yet
to be seen by me, but being paid for showing ads or for a viewer
click-through may just offset some of your own advertising budget. The
implied potential is, however, why you see ads on just about every
single site for submission services, search engines, credit cards
and loans. The "affiliate", an impressive sounding
name which I felt couldn't possibly include me, can be anyone with
a site willing to show a banner promoting some product or other.
Generally through a main company which handles the statistics,
companies process payments of from one cent up, per lead (click
through) or product sale, to individuals like yourself who copy
an ad with your code number on it to your site. When enough people
click on the ad they eventually send a cheque, if and when it reaches
$25.
A word of caution though, do not promote or endorse a product
that either demeans your image or that you can't envision as a
benefit to your customers even if you may not use it yourself. Surely
it has to be alright to be compensated for a link you would have
provided for free to begin with. In fact it is becoming quickly
apparent that you could create a store with thousands of products
ads which you could categorize for customer ease of use.
I use HD
Publishing for their good programs on "finding out the
truth about anyone".
To keep track of the html code which is often confusing and does
not always clearly state which affiliate it belongs to, you will
want to insert some comments before and after the code so you can
find it later if you need to remove or modify it. Affiliates
often trick you into putting in the code promising big bucks, then
drop the payment to pennies hoping you just leave it in and continue
to send customers their way. It takes some work to keep track
of the changing offers so make it a bit easier with this. <!--
Comment Such and Such an Affiliate --> before and after
the html code. Be sure to put in the actual company name
because many affiliate organizers only put in a code number, leaving
you at a loss to find them with a keyword search.
Although I don't think it has happened to me, sometimes FrontPage
and other programs screw up the code resulting in you not getting
paid. Apparently if you enter your code as follows it solves
the problem.
